Developing the next generation LED lamp for improved light quality

In the early noughties, TYRI were the first premium manufacturer to fully invest in LED and leave the development of halogen lamps behind. Our experts saw all the benefits LED had to offer and realized early on that it was LED that the future market would demand. Today we are once again leading the field to produce the next generation LED work lights with higher quality of light both in terms of colour temperature and colour reproduction.

Working alongside our customers, we are constantly learning about new challenges they face across different sectors. This relationship is our most important asset to the research and development of our new work lights.

LED light has many benefits, but there are still things that can be done better, such as colour reproduction and colour temperature. Today, most premium lamps are between 70-75 CRI (colour rendering index) and 5-7000 Kelvin (temperature). This means that in different situations it is difficult to determine the material quality due to colours becoming misleading and contrasts being unclear which affects, among other things, the distance assessment.

During conversations with our customers, the challenges with distinguishing different stone materials and fractions as well as issues with glare during snow removal were voiced. This made us start researching how we could improve the light quality in our lamps. The light reflects strongly both from the snow on the ground and in the air and this makes it difficult to see and the eyes become strained. In addition, it is difficult to see ditches and other variations in a snowy environment. However, with better colour rendering and lower/warmer colour temperature, the landscape becomes clearer and the eye, as well as the brain, do not have to work as hard.

After several years of research and development, we developed a prototype Hi-CRI work light that we began testing on snow removal machines. Moving further in our development we also tested the work lights in other environments as well, such as quarries and forestry.

 

“Our new LED work lights measure 90-95 CRI, which means that we are now approaching the same light quality as with incandescent lamps, i.e. 90-100 CRI,” explains Claes Laitinen, Product Developer at TYRI.

Testing the new LED work lights in real world environments, provided TYRI with excellent feedback from operators. However, raising the light quality of the LED light has long been at the expense of brightness.

One of the biggest challenges faced was to increase the quality of the light whilst delivering the right number of lumens. TYRI has achieved this and the Hi-CRI LED work light delivers approximately 3200 effective lumen.
“Finally, technology has caught up with our development and we have found suppliers who can deliver quality components to enable series production. With the new HI-CRI LED work light, we have succeeded in creating better light regardless of the area of use, and there are only advantages of gaining better colour reproduction.

Our first prototypes required many work lights to reach a satisfactory brightness, however, through our product development, it is now possible to significantly reduce the number of work lights and still maintain the required brightness that our customers expect, reducing the cost for customers.” says Claes Laitinen.
